Bagan
23.12.2010
From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Kingdom of Pagan, the first kingdom to unify the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. During the kingdom's height between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 4000 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day.

Locals
Not sure....Was in the most remote place down near the river

Local kids followed me around for hours, and took me places I would have never found on my own.

The view from my balcony
In the heat of the day, this was heaven

Once I realized the enormity of Bagan, there was only one thing left to do...Rent a mountain bike! $1.50 a day
Inside almost every temple were 1000 year old murals and Buddha images
Even the gates were beautiful
4000 temples in a valley the size of Monterey Bay
Most were more than a thousand years old

On top of Shwesandaw Paya, looking towards Dhammayangyi Paya

Time for re-gilding
Miles of trails, thousands of temples, and no one there but me

Along a bend in the Ayerwaddy River
I told them I was checking out, I came back to this
On my way to the beach
